The Small Part That Does Everything

The watch crown is the knob on the side of your watch. It winds the movement, sets the time, and on dive watches, screws down for water resistance.

Screw-Down vs Push-Pull

  • Screw-down crown threads into the case for water resistance. Used on dive watches. See: Dive Watch Guide
  • Push-pull crown simpler, easier to use. Used on dress and casual watches.

How to Wind a Watch

  1. Unscrew the crown turn counterclockwise
  2. Wind clockwise 20-30 turns
  3. Screw the crown back down turn clockwise
