Gagà Laboratorio Labormatic Superleggero in grade 5 titanium

The watchmaking world has seen a notable influx of independent brands pushing material boundaries in 2026, and Gagà Laboratorio is the latest to make headlines. Officially launched just two years ago as a spin-off of the longstanding Italian luxury designer watchmaker Gagà Milano, the brand has unveiled the Labormatic Superleggero — a lightweight interpretation of its signature timepiece crafted entirely in grade 5 titanium.

Italian Lightweight Expertise Meets Swiss Precision

According to Monochrome Watches, the Labormatic Superleggero draws direct inspiration from Italy's longstanding expertise in lightweight construction, particularly in coachbuilding, racing machines, and performance cars. The creative spirit behind the Labormatic is Mo Coppoletta, the acclaimed tattoo artist who teamed up with founder Ruben Tomella to define the brand's distinctive personality.

The new model retains the flamboyant 42mm × 13.3mm case construction of earlier iterations, complete with dramatic flared lugs, a crown positioned at noon, and a rotund bezel. However, the matte sandblasted titanium gives the watch a markedly sportier appeal. To highlight the unusual shape of the stepped lugs, the top surface is sandblasted while the bottom lug attached to the case middle is brushed. The crown, featuring rounded rivets, sports a grey cabochon that complements the grey titanium case.

Sapphire Crystal Display Windows

While the time indications on the dial retain their positions from previous Labormatic models, the dial has been significantly opened up. Four arched windows — not including the smaller aperture at noon for the hours — feature laser-engraved sapphire crystals protected by grilles that reveal sections of the hours disc. The numerals are now rendered in bright yellow, with even numbers set against a dotted black-and-white background. A playful touch sees each numeral flanked by a smaller version on the left and the preceding numeral on the right.

The minutes are displayed on a greyish-blue disc with a series of spokes, indicated by a rotating yellow hand, while the seconds spin on a matte grey cap in the centre. The porthole on the caseback offers a view of the automatic G-100 La Joux-Perret movement, featuring a customised openworked, charcoal-coated Gagà Laboratorio rotor. Beating at 28,800 vph, the movement delivers a comfortable 68 hours of power reserve.

Titanium in Modern Watchmaking

The choice of grade 5 titanium for the Superleggero is significant in the current watch material landscape. Grade 5 titanium (Ti-6Al-4V) offers a tensile strength of approximately 950 MPa — comparable to many steel alloys — while weighing roughly 45% less. Its excellent corrosion resistance and biocompatibility make it particularly suited for watchmaking applications where comfort and durability are paramount.

According to industry reports, titanium watch production has increased by approximately 18% year-over-year since 2023, driven by consumer demand for lighter, more wearable timepieces. Brands ranging from Tudor to Grand Seiko have expanded their titanium offerings, and the material has become a staple at every major watch fair.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes grade 5 titanium different from pure titanium?
Grade 5 titanium is an alloy containing 6% aluminium and 4% vanadium, offering significantly higher strength than commercially pure titanium while maintaining excellent corrosion resistance. In watchmaking, it is preferred for its ability to be polished, brushed, and sandblasted to a high standard.

Is the Labormatic Superleggero suitable for daily wear?
With 50m water resistance and a lightweight titanium case, the watch is designed for everyday use. However, the technical elastic fabric strap may be better suited for casual rather than athletic wear.

How does the digital hour display work?
The Labormatic uses a revolving disc system visible through an aperture at noon. The hour is displayed numerically rather than through traditional hands, while minutes and seconds are indicated by conventional rotating elements on the dial.
