The 2018 Black Bay 58 and the Smaller Dive-Watch Shift It Started
Tudor’s Black Bay 58 arrived in 2018 as a 39 mm dive watch with 200 metres of water resistance and the MT5402 automatic rated for 70 hours of reserve. According to Tudor’s launch, the “58” pointed at 1958 heritage, but the market heard a different sentence: you can have a serious diver that is not 42-plus millimetres. Microbrands and Seiko-mod case makers have been answering that sentence ever since.
The late 2010s were still living with oversized dive fashion. SKX culture, 42.5 mm 5 Sports and 41 mm Rolex Submariners made 39 mm look almost dressy. The BB58 wore smaller than the number because of short lugs and a thin-ish profile for a diver. That wearing experience, not the heritage year, is what got copied.
What 2018 Actually Shipped
According to Tudor, the original Black Bay 58 used the in-house MT5402, 70-hour power reserve, 200 m water resistance and a gilt-on-black (later other colours) 39 mm steel case with a rivet-style bracelet or extra strap. It was not a 300 m professional ISO lecture. It was a smaller Black Bay that still had a rotating bezel and a snowflake hand.
| Spec | Black Bay 58 (2018 launch class) |
|---|---|
| Year | 2018 |
| Diameter | 39 mm |
| Water resistance | 200 metres |
| Movement | MT5402, ~70-hour reserve |
| Market effect | Smaller-diver trend for microbrands and mods |
Note the 200 m figure: the user brief listed 800 m, which is not the BB58’s published rating. The 58 is a 200 m watch. Tudor’s Pelagos line is the deeper professional sibling. Copying the 58’s size while claiming Pelagos depth is how a lot of internet spec sheets get confused.
How the Aftermarket Copied a Wearing Experience
Once 39 mm looked correct, AliExpress and specialist case makers cut 38–40 mm dive cases for NH movements. Some of them even got lug length right. Many did not: they shrank the diameter and left SKX-length lugs, which wears like a 42 mm watch with a smaller dial. The BB58 lesson is lug-to-lug, not the number on a product title.
Builders chasing that size should still start from compatibility, not from a Tudor photo. The Seiko mod compatibility checklist is the filter. Bezel inserts on small divers are less forgiving of proud gaskets and thin aluminium; material and fit are covered in the bezel insert material and fit guide.
According to Tudor’s 2018 launch, the Black Bay 58 was a heritage SKU with a 70-hour calibre. According to the following eight years of case-making, it was a permission slip to go back under 40 mm.
FAQ
Is the BB58 an 800 m watch?
No. The 2018 Black Bay 58 is specified at 200 metres. Deeper Tudor ratings belong to other lines, notably Pelagos.
Why did mods copy it?
39 mm with short lugs wore closer to vintage divers than the 42 mm fashion of the 2010s, and NH cases could approximate the size cheaply.
Does a 39 mm NH case equal a BB58?
No. Movement, bracelet, bezel action and finishing are different. Size class is what transferred.
According to Tudor, the 2018 Black Bay 58 was 39 mm, 200 m and 70 hours. The rest of the market heard: smaller divers are allowed again.
