Ressence Type 11 Review - In-House Movement and Ceramic Bead Power Reserve
Ressence Type 11 Review: A Thematic Restart for the Innovative Brand
Ressence, the innovative Belgian watch brand founded by industrial designer Benoit Mintiens, has achieved what many thought impossible: creating the watch it always wanted to make. The Type 11 represents the culmination of nearly two decades of development, featuring the brand's first exclusive in-house movement and a design that finally realizes Mintiens' original vision.
Two Decades in the Making
The Type 11 is, in essence, the watch Ressence wanted to create from the very beginning. Previous models — while impressive in their own right — were evolutionary steps along the way, often requiring compromises like using existing mechanical movements and modifying them with bespoke modules.
The quest to make the Ressence watch that Mr. Mintiens truly wanted was also the quest to create an in-house-designed movement system that could power it. That goal has finally been achieved with the Werk RW-01 automatic movement.
The Werk RW-01: Ressence's First In-House Movement
The RW-01 is fully designed by Ressence to meet its particular requirements. It operates at 4Hz with 60 hours of power reserve between two mainspring barrels. The movement fully integrates the ROCS (Ressence Orbital Convex System) display, allowing for a thinner profile and more elegant mechanism.

Innovative Ceramic Bead Power Reserve
One of the most fascinating features of the RW-01 is its novel power reserve indicator. Instead of a traditional hand or disc, Ressence uses small colored ceramic beads. As the power winds up, a yellow ball moves clockwise, followed by white balls that fill the scale. As power recedes, dark blue ceramic spheres take over.
The detail is subtle but effective, representing a creative approach to a common watch complication that demonstrates Ressence's commitment to innovation.
Ergonomic Excellence
On the wrist, the Type 11 case is remarkably comfortable. Produced from polished grade 5 titanium, it weighs just 49 grams with the strap included. The case is inspired by a smooth pebble — very smooth to the touch without sharp or snagging edges. Despite measuring 41mm by 11mm, it feels thinner on the wrist.
The dial is very legible and fully lumed, with a convex surface that's produced from grade 5 titanium. At launch, three dial colors are available: "Sky" blue, "Pine" green, and "Latte" tan.
A New Setting System
The RW-01 introduces a fold-out titanium metal winding handle that replaces the unusual setting mechanisms of previous Ressence watches. Turn the handle one direction to adjust time forward, the other direction to go backward. One direction also winds the mainspring barrel for manual winding.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How does the Ressence Type 11 compare to previous models?
A: The Type 11 is thinner, easier to set, powered by an uncompromised mechanical engine, and elegantly presented. It represents a significant advancement over previous Ressence models while remaining priced in the middle of the range.
Q: Is the ceramic bead power reserve indicator practical?
A: Yes, while the detail is subtle, the visual effect works well and provides a clear indication of remaining power reserve through the color-coded ceramic spheres.
Q: What are the available dial colors?
A: At launch, the Type 11 is available in three colors: Sky (blue), Pine (green), and Latte (tan). More colors are expected in the future.
