Ressence Type 11 Review: A Thematic Restart With In-House Movement
Ressence Achieves Its Original Vision After Two Decades
Belgium-based Ressence has unveiled the Type 11, a watch that founder Benoit Mintiens has been working toward since the brand's inception. After years of building modules on top of existing mechanical movements, Ressence has finally created its first fully in-house designed movement — the Werk RW-01 — which integrates the brand's signature ROCS (Ressence Orbital Convex System) display from the ground up.
The Werk RW-01: Purpose-Built for ROCS
Previous Ressence watches used existing mechanical movements modified with bespoke modules powered by magnets or oil. While innovative, this approach added complexity without necessarily improving the ownership experience. The Werk RW-01 changes the equation entirely.
The automatic movement operates at 4Hz with 60 hours of power reserve between two mainspring barrels. It features 40 jewels, 67 gears, and 18 ball bearings. Each movement is individually serialized.

Innovative Ceramic Bead Power Reserve
One of the RW-01's most distinctive features is its power reserve indicator. Rather than a traditional hand or disc, Ressence uses small colored ceramic beads that move along a spiral-shaped cavity. As power winds up, yellow and white beads fill the scale; as reserve depletes, dark blue ceramic spheres take over. The effect is subtle but adds a unique tactile and visual dimension to the display.
Ergonomics: The 49-Gram Titanium Pebble
The Type 11 case is produced from polished grade 5 titanium and weighs just 49 grams with strap included. Measuring 41mm wide by 11mm thick (with 30 meters water resistance), the pebble-inspired design features smooth curves with no sharp edges. A fold-out titanium winding handle replaces the traditional crown, allowing time setting and manual winding in one direction, time adjustment in the other.
Three Dial Colors at Launch
The Type 11 debuts in three colorways: "Sky" blue, "Pine" green, and "Latte" tan. All feature fully lumed dials with the regulator-style display showing hours, minutes, seconds, and power reserve. The convex sapphire crystal has been improved to reduce glare compared to previous Ressence models.
Pricing & Value Proposition
The titanium Ressence Type 11 is priced at $31,400 USD. Notably, this is less expensive than several other Ressence models (Type 3, 5, and 7) that use modular movements rather than the integrated RW-01. Ressence expects to gradually replace movements in other iconic watch models with RW-01-based systems over time.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the ROCS display system?
ROCS (Ressence Orbital Convex System) is the brand's signature rotating orbital convex display that shows time through discs-within-discs. The Type 11 uses ROCS 11.1, which is fully integrated with the in-house Werk RW-01 movement.
How do you set the time without a crown?
The Type 11 features a fold-out titanium winding handle. Turn it one direction to wind the mainspring and adjust time forward; turn the other direction to adjust time backward. After winding, you simply reset to the correct time using a reference clock.
Is the strap included interchangeable?
Yes, the Type 11 uses a standard 20mm strap system. While the included leather strap features a unique tuck-under buckle design, the watch is compatible with aftermarket straps for those who prefer alternatives.
