Airport Counters and Maison Capsules Widen the 2026 Pre-Owned Sales Map
The used-watch counter is no longer only a website and a locked salon. In January 2026, Florida-based Bob’s Watches opened a walk-up concession inside John F. Kennedy International Airport’s Terminal 8, the British Airways and American Airlines hall, according to WatchPro. The dealer had already placed stock with travel-retail operator Avolta in Las Vegas and Abu Dhabi. Each airport case typically holds 20 to 30 rotating pieces, sourced from United States inventory and sold, not bought, airside.
That is a distribution story as much as a product story. Airports already concentrate luxury traffic; duty-free pricing, no state sales tax and no import duty for departing passengers change the ticket math. Travellers who would not book a Naples or Newport Beach appointment can now inspect a certified used sports watch between gates. The same travellers also carry theft and insurance questions that sit in the watch theft and travel-risk briefing.
Who Else Is Putting Used Watches on Official Floors
Bob’s Watches is not the first airport used-watch experiment. Watchfinder opened inside a Richemont TimeVallée at Hamad International in Doha in 2023, and Gebr. Heinemann has run a pre-owned luxury mix, including watches, at Copenhagen Airport. What changed in 2025–26 is the mix of independents and maisons.
- Rolex Certified Pre-Owned: authorised-dealer network, two-year manufacturer guarantee, age floor cut from three years to two.
- IWC. Curated (September 2025): museum-selected historical pieces, first shown at Battersea Power Station, then Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Dubai and Japan, with an IWC international limited warranty of up to eight years.
- Vacheron Constantin Les Collectionneurs: the older maison template IWC’s project most closely resembles, dating to 2008.
- Independent travel retail: Bob’s Watches with Avolta; Watchfinder in Doha; Heinemann in Copenhagen.
According to IWC museum curator Dr. David Seyffer, quoted by WatchPro, the first Curated capsule included a 1970s Gérald Genta Ingenieur SL (Ref. 1832), a 1985 Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph (Ref. 3750) and a 1952 Mark 11 navigator’s watch made for the Royal Air Force. That is not a volume CPO programme. It is a provenance product with a maison warranty sitting beside the open secondary web.

Authentication Cost Rises With Super-Fakes
Paul Altieri, Bob’s Watches chief executive, told WatchPro in January 2026 that $500 super-fakes now copy polishing, dials, hands and even movements well enough to fool a first glance. Vintage is the higher-stakes lane: the firm said about 90% of its vintage purchases come from original owners because dealer-to-dealer cycling is where “Frankenstein” part swaps appear. A public demonstration of how far replicas have come sits in the Bond Street super-fake boutique report.
Tariffs added a second overlay. According to the same WatchPro interview, a 39% United States duty on Swiss watches interrupted authorised supply, pulled purchases forward, then froze them. Used stock became a buffer. Altieri said secondary prices, in his firm’s book, had bottomed about two years earlier and risen roughly 7–10% in the latest full year, with Rolex CPO often 20–25% above independent secondary.
FAQ
Why put pre-owned watches in an airport?
According to Altieri, quoted by WatchPro, airports are already luxury shopping floors, and JFK Terminal 8 offers duty-free, no sales tax and no import duty for departing travellers, plus immediate inspection.
Is IWC. Curated the same as Rolex CPO?
No. Rolex CPO is a scaled authorised-dealer programme for relatively recent used watches. IWC. Curated is a small, museum-chosen historical capsule with a long maison warranty, closer to Vacheron Constantin’s Les Collectionneurs.
What is the main operational risk on these new floors?
Authentication. Super-fakes and Franken-vintage raise the cost of taking a watch apart. Airport staff also need model and price training on a 20–30 piece case that turns over constantly.
According to WatchPro’s January and September 2025–26 reporting, the resale map now includes duty-free vitrines and maison capsules as well as Chrono24 listings — and the inspection standard has to travel with the stock.
