Panerai Luminor Luna Rossa Chrono and GMT: Sailing-Inspired Watches for the 38th America's Cup
As the countdown to the 38th America's Cup in Naples continues, Panerai has once again turned to its partnership with sailing team Luna Rossa to produce two new sport-focused Luminor watches. Since teaming up with Luna Rossa in 2019, Panerai has made the collaboration into a proving ground for its modern sports watches — and the latest chapter adds two distinct pieces: the Luminor Luna Rossa Chrono PAM01768 and the Luminor Luna Rossa GMT PAM01791.
PAM01768: Chronograph Built for Speed
The more purpose-built of the two, the Luminor Luna Rossa Chrono PAM01768 is housed in a 44mm brushed steel case with a silver sun-brushed dial and red details inspired by the Luna Rossa team colours. It features a tachymeter scale for measuring average speed over a set distance, working together with the central red-and-white chronograph seconds hand to calculate speed in kilometres or miles per hour.
Inside is the calibre P.9210, an automatic chronograph movement beating at 28,800 vibrations/hour with a 42-hour power reserve. This limited edition of 500 pieces introduces a first for the Luna Rossa collection: an elastic Velcro strap with a red central stripe and quick-adjust design. A second black rubber strap is also included.
PAM01791: First Luna Rossa with Metal Bracelet
The Luminor Luna Rossa GMT PAM01791 takes a different approach. At 40mm, it is among the more compact watches in the Luna Rossa family, and it becomes the first Luna Rossa watch to be fitted with a metal bracelet. The silver sun-brushed dial has red accents on the small seconds hand and the arrow-shaped GMT hand, whose shape is inspired by the sail of the Luna Rossa yacht.
Power comes from the automatic P.900/GMT calibre with a three-day power reserve and a 12-hour second-time-zone display. Water resistance is 100 metres, and the watch features Panerai's PAM Click Release System, allowing the bracelet to be swapped for another strap without tools.
