Glashütte Original Splits the Senator Chronograph Into Two Dial Languages

Glashütte Original has replaced its Senator Chronograph Panorama Date with two new flyback watches: a classical Senator Chronograph and a matte-black Senator Chronograph Navigator. Both use in-house automatic calibre 37-24, a column-wheel chronograph with a silicon balance spring. Hodinkee introduced the pair on 20 August 2026.

One case, two programmes

The shared silhouette is 41mm in steel, 12.9mm thick, 48.5mm lug-to-lug. That is 1mm smaller in diameter and nearly 2mm thinner than the outgoing 42mm Panorama Date chronographs. Water resistance is 50 metres. Bracelet and strap options are steel, textile, or alligator.

The Navigator leaves the Senator’s usual Roman-numeral language. The matte black dial uses three-dimensional luminescent Arabic numerals, snailed subdials, a recessed Panorama Date at six, and sword hands with Super-LumiNova. The case is mostly brushed with a conical crown. Hodinkee described it as the brand’s only conventional tool-watch design outside the SeaQ divers.

The non-Navigator Senator Chronograph uses a galvanic silver-white dial, solid-gold applied Roman numerals coated blue, and a fully blued steel handset. The case is fully polished, with a polished centre-link bracelet when steel is specified.

The 12-hour totalizer at 12 o’clock is gone. That space now holds the logo, and the power-reserve indication that previously sat in the small-seconds subdial is also removed. Glashütte striping, blued screws, and a more open rotor remain visible through the exhibition back. According to Hodinkee, the layout change is the most visible mechanical departure from the current Panorama Date chronograph.

German manufacture in a Swiss-shaped market

Column-wheel flybacks at this price sit against Swiss sports chronographs that dominate wait lists. Glashütte Original is selling finishing, the Panorama Date, and a thinner Senator case rather than a new complication. Dual SKUs—one dress, one tool—let the same calibre reach two retail conversations.

Builders who compare automatic movements for aftermarket cases face a simpler fork: date window, day-date, or GMT. An NH35 vs NH36 vs NH34 guide is the analogue of GO’s two-dial strategy, at a different cost and finishing level. Bracelet choice also splits the new Senators: brushed tool versus polished centre links. That debate is familiar on oyster-style and jubilee-style aftermarket bracelets; a Jubilee vs Oyster comparison covers fit and finishing on Seiko-sized end links.

Neither watch is a limited edition. Availability is through Glashütte Original retailers. References reported are 1-37-24-01-02-71 for the classical Senator Chronograph and 1-37-24-20-12-71 for the Navigator, both on steel bracelet in the coverage cited.

FAQ

Do both watches share a movement? Yes. Calibre 37-24 is a manufacture automatic flyback with Panorama Date, 70-hour reserve, and a silicon balance spring. The 12-hour chronograph counter of the previous generation is omitted.

Is the Navigator a dive watch? No. Water resistance is 50 metres. The black lumed dial and brushed case are a tool-watch aesthetic inside the Senator line, not a SeaQ replacement.

How much smaller is the new case? 41mm by 12.9mm versus 42mm and a thicker outgoing Panorama Date chrono. Lug-to-lug is 48.5mm on both new models.
