How to Create a Tropical Bezel: Aging Black to Brown
What is a Tropical Bezel?
A tropical bezel has faded from black to brown, matching the tropical dial effect. This happens naturally from decades of UV exposure but can be created artificially.
Methods
Extended Bleach
Use weak bleach for extended periods (hours instead of minutes). The longer exposure creates brown tones instead of just gray. Check every 10-15 minutes.
UV + Bleach Combination
First expose to UV for several days, then use bleach. The UV weakens the color, and the bleach accelerates the brown shift.
Oven Method
Bake aluminum bezel at 350-400F for 15-20 minutes. The heat creates brown and gold tones. This is faster but less controllable.
Coffee Bath
Soak the bezel in strong brewed coffee for several hours. The coffee stains the faded areas brown. This gives a subtle, natural look.
Matching to Dial
The bezel brown should complement the dial brown. Test both together before final assembly. They do not need to be identical, but should be in the same color family.
FAQ
Can I tropical a ceramic bezel?
Ceramic is very difficult to color-change. Aluminum is the preferred material for tropical bezels.
