Cartier Adds Dual-Time Functionality to the Santos Collection

For the first time in the Santos de Cartier collection, Cartier introduces a dual-time complication. The new Santos de Cartier Dual Time brings practical travel functionality to the aviation-inspired model line that has been a cornerstone of Cartier's sports watch offerings since its inception.

Design and Functionality

The Santos de Cartier Dual Time features the collection's signature square case with exposed screws, paired with the iconic blue synthetic spinel cabochon crown. The new subdial sits between 5 and 7 o'clock, presented in light gray to match the rest of the dial. The round shape of the subdial is reminiscent of the Ballon Bleu Dual Time and complements the other shapes on the dial.

The watch is slightly larger than the standard large model at 40.2mm across and 10.1mm thick (compared to 39.8mm and 9.38mm for the standard large Santos). Despite the added dimensions, the curved lugs ensure comfortable wrist presence, and the proprietary QuickSwitch system allows for easy bracelet swapping.

Movement and Power Reserve

Unlike the time-only Santos de Cartier, which uses the in-house caliber 1847 MC, the Dual Time utilizes a modified outsourced movement. This choice provides a slightly longer 48-hour power reserve compared to the in-house caliber's 42 hours. While purists may have reservations about the outsourced movement, the modification allows for the practical dual-time complication that many travelers appreciate.

FAQ

What is the difference between a dual-time watch and a GMT?

A dual-time watch displays two time zones simultaneously on the dial, while a GMT typically requires a 24-hour scale and a dedicated hand for the second time zone. The Santos Dual Time shows both zones with standard 12-hour hands.

Can I use third-party straps with the Santos Dual Time?

No, the QuickSwitch system is proprietary, limiting the wearer to Cartier straps and bracelets only. However, the system makes switching between included options quick and tool-free.

Will Cartier release smaller sizes of the Santos Dual Time?

There were rumors at Watches and Wonders that Cartier might expand the Santos Dual Time line with smaller sizes, though nothing has been officially confirmed yet.
