Royal Oak Gets a Vibrant Green Makeover

Audemars Piguet has expanded its stone dial offerings with two new Royal Oak Selfwinding references featuring vivid green malachite dials in 37mm and 41mm yellow gold cases. Following the success of the 2023 turquoise dial Royal Oak, AP continues to embrace the trend for exotic stone dials.

The Art of Malachite

Natural malachite is prized for its vibrant green colour and unique banded patterns. Fluctuations in copper content produce subtle variations: higher copper concentration results in deeper, more intense green, while smaller amounts produce lighter shades. Formed during crystallisation, the striking banded patterns make each dial unique.

With a hardness of only 3.5-4 on the Mohs scale, cutting the relatively soft, heat-sensitive stone into ultra-thin slabs requires precision lapidary saws to avoid breakage.

Movement and Design

The 37mm model is powered by the Vaucher-sourced calibre 5909, a 4Hz automatic with 60-hour power reserve. The 41mm model uses AP's in-house calibre 4309, featuring a larger 32mm diameter for excellent chronometric performance and 70-hour power reserve.

Both references feature integrated 18k yellow gold bracelets with triple-blade folding clasps. Unlike the earlier RO turquoise edition, these models omit the date window, allowing the polished green stone to flow uninterrupted.
