How to Age a Watch Crown and Pushers
Why Age the Crown?
A shiny new crown on an otherwise aged watch looks wrong. The crown is one of the most handled parts of a watch and should show wear.
Methods
Sanding
Fine sandpaper (400-800 grit) creates directional scratches that mimic years of winding. Focus on the grip surfaces.
Wire Brush
A brass wire brush adds finer marks. This is more subtle than sandpaper and looks very natural.
Tumbling
Place the crown in a small bag with pebbles. Shake to create random dings. This is the fastest method.
Chemical Darkening
Birchwood Casey or similar products can darken the crown. Apply with a cotton bud, let sit, then buff.
For Pushers
Pushers are smaller and more delicate. Use the same methods but with lighter pressure. Focus on the tips where fingers contact.
FAQ
Will aging affect crown function?
Not if you are careful. Avoid sanding the stem or gasket surfaces. Only age the visible exterior.
