How to Age a NATO Strap: Quick Methods for Nylon and Leather
Nylon NATO Aging
Nylon NATOs can be faded to look vintage. The most common methods are bleach dipping and sun exposure.
Bleach Method
Dilute bleach in water (1:10 ratio). Soak the strap for 30 minutes to several hours. Check frequently. The nylon fades from dark to gray. Rinse thoroughly after.
Sun Exposure
Leave the strap in direct sunlight for several days. The UV slowly fades the color. This is more gradual and controllable than bleach.
Physical Distressing
Sand the strap with fine sandpaper to remove sheen. This works on both nylon and leather NATOs.
Leather NATO Aging
Leather NATOs respond to the same methods as regular leather straps: sandpaper, oils, bending, and acetone treatment.
Color Matching
When aging a strap to match an aged watch, consider the overall color palette. A faded gray NATO works well with ghost bezels. A dark brown leather NATO matches coffee-stained dials.
