How to Age Lume on Watch Dials and Hands
What Happens to Lume Over Time?
Original luminous material (radium, tritium, or modern Super-LumiNova) yellows and darkens with age. Radium turns cream or yellow. Tritium fades to gray or green. This aging is one of the most prized vintage features.
Methods for Aging Lume
Coffee and Oven
The most popular method. Coffee grounds stain the lume while heat yellows it. Place hands face-down on wet grounds. Bake at 275-350F for 5-20 minutes.
Heat Gun
More control than oven. Hold heat gun 6-8 inches away on low setting. Move constantly. This yellows lume without staining metal.
UV Exposure
Leave under UV light for days or weeks. This mimics natural aging. The most authentic method but takes longest.
Tamiya Powders
Apply rust or soot powder to lume plots. This adds color without heat. More reversible than other methods.
Paint Wash
Dilute brown acrylic paint. Brush over lume and wipe off excess. Color stays in recesses. Build up in layers.
Matching Lume to Dial
The lume color should be consistent across dial and hands. Age both together or age the dial first and match hands to it.
FAQ
Does aging lume reduce its brightness?
Slightly. Coffee and heat methods reduce brightness by about one-third. This actually adds to the vintage look.
